Technicians have identified what caused a large number of websites to have intermittent connectivity earlier today.
During the mitigation process of a cybersecurity attack that occurred late last week, several Indicators of Compromise (IoC) were blocked in order to protect the university against malware.
One of the IP addresses blocked during that process belonged to a Certificate Revocation List (CRL) for the Certificate Authority used by the affected services. This occurred because the bad actor was making use of the commercial infrastructure in their attack against UBC.
The block for the CRL has now been removed, and connectivity to all previously affected websites has been restored. Steps will be taken to white-list the CRL, such that this should not happen again.
UPDATE: February 24, 2020, 14:00 PT
We continue to have connectivity issues for a significant number of websites.
As the loss of connection is intermittent, it is recommended that you wait a few minutes in between connection attempts to an affected site.
Our next update is scheduled for 15:30PT.
