SMTP Service was down on August 1, 2006 from 9:16am to 10:39am

The SMTP email service (TCP port 25) for outbound mail through was responding poorly on August 1, 2006 from 9:19am to 10:40am due to overload by spammers.

Not affected were other more widely used services such as SMTPs (465) and SMTP-submit (587), and the mail reading services POPs and IMAPs, and of course other servers. SMTP is mostly used for server-to-server outbound mail.

Some mail delays on the order of 1 hour are to be expected to be cleared by noon. We are investigating to prevent recurrence.
